PREGNANCY CATEGORY D

Drug Classes

Angiotensin II receptor antagonist

Antihypertensive

Therapeutic Actions

Selectively blocks the binding of angiotensin II to specific tissue receptors found in the vascular smooth muscle and adrenal gland; this action blocks the vasoconstriction effect of the renin-angiotensin system, as well as the release of aldosterone, leading to decreased BP.

Indications

  • Treatment of hypertension, alone or in combination with other antihypertensive

  • CV risk reduction, including risk of MI, stroke, or death, in patients 55 yr and older at high risk for developing major CV events who are unable to take ACE inhibitors

Available Forms

Tablets—20, 40, 80 mg

Dosages

Adults

Usual starting dose, 40 mg PO daily. Adjust dosage based on patient response. Range, 20–80 mg/day. If response is still not as expected, a diuretic may be added. For CV risk reduction, 80 mg PO once a day.
