Therapeutic Actions

Dopamine agonist; stimulates dopamine receptors within the caudate putamen in the brain, which relieves some of the signs and symptoms of Parkinson disease. Restless legs syndrome is thought to be related to inability to stimulate dopamine receptors in this area of the brain.


Indications



  • Treatment of signs and symptoms of Parkinson disease


  • Treatment of moderate to severe restless legs syndrome




Available Forms

Transdermal patch—1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 mg/24 hr


Dosages

Adults



  • Parkinson disease: 2-mg/24-hr transdermal patch for early stage disease to 4-mg/24-hr transdermal patch for advanced disease; may increase to a maximum 6-mg/24-hr transdermal patch for early stage disease or 8-mg/24-hr transdermal patch for advanced disease.


  • Restless legs syndrome: 1-mg/24-hr transdermal patch up to a maximum 3-mg/24-hr transdermal patch as needed
