Therapeutic Actions

Inhibits the virus-specific enzyme integrase, an encoded enzyme needed for viral replication. Blocking this enzyme prevents formation of HIV-1 provirus and leads to decreased viral load and increased active CD4 cells.


Indications



  • In combination with other antiretrovirals for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and children 4 wk and older weighing at least 3 kg



Available Forms

Tablets—400 mg; chewable tablets—25, 100 mg; suspension—100 mg packets


Dosages

Adults

400 mg PO bid taken with other antivirals and without regard to food. If given with rifampin, 800 mg PO bid without regard to food.
