Therapeutic Actions

Thought to increase sensitivity to GABA, leading to inhibition of nervous transmission and CNS depression.


Indications



  • Induction and maintenance of general anesthesia


  • Monitored anesthesia care


  • Combined sedation and regional anesthesia


  • Intensive care unit (ICU) sedation of intubated and mechanically ventilated adults

Dosages

Adults



  • Induction of general anesthesia: 2–2.5 mg/kg IV at 40 mg every 10 sec.


  • Induction of general anesthesia in neurosurgical patients: 1–2 mg/kg IV at 20 mg every 10 sec.


  • Induction of general anesthesia in cardiac surgery: 0.5–1.5 mg/kg IV at 20 mg every 10 sec.


  • Maintenance of general anesthesia: 100–200 mcg/kg/min IV or intermittent bolus of 25–50 mg based on patient response.


  • Monitored anesthesia care: 25–75 mcg/kg/min IV based on patient response.


  • ICU sedation of intubated patients: 5–50 mcg/kg/min IV as a continuous infusion.

Pediatric patients 3–16 yr
