Plaster care
Plaster casts are applied for a variety of reasons. They can consist of plaster of Paris or synthetic materials such as fibreglass, depending on the reason. It is important for the nurse to know the reason why the cast is being applied, what type of material is required and how long it is to remain in place. It is also essential when applying lower limb casts to know whether the child is allowed to bear weight.
Reasons for application
- Treatment of fractures
- Following orthopaedic surgical procedures
- To improve function by stabilization of a joint
- To correct and prevent deformities
- To provide pain relief
- To permit early ambulation and weight bearing
- To make a mould of a limb for splints to be made.
