Therapeutic Actions

Bactericidal: Inhibits synthesis of cell wall of sensitive organisms, causing cell death.


Indications



  • Severe infections caused by sensitive organisms (streptococci)


  • URI caused by sensitive streptococci


  • Treatment of syphilis, bejel, congenital syphilis, pinta, yaws


  • Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever and chorea



Available Forms

Injection—600,000, 1.2 million, 2.4 million units/dose


Dosages

Adults



  • Streptococcal infections (including otitis media, URIs of mild to moderate severity): 1.2 million units IM as a single dose.



  • Early syphilis: 2.4 million units IM as a single dose.


  • Syphilis lasting longer than 1 yr: 7.2 million units given as 2.4 million units IM weekly for 3 wk.


  • Yaws, bejel, pinta: 1.2 million units IM as a single dose.


  • Erysipeloid: 1.2 million units IM as a single dose.


  • Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever or chorea: 1.2 million units IM every month; alternatively, 600,000 units every 2 wk.
