Therapeutic Actions
Bactericidal: Inhibits synthesis of cell wall of sensitive organisms, causing cell death.
Indications
Severe infections caused by sensitive organisms (streptococci)
URI caused by sensitive streptococci
Treatment of syphilis, bejel, congenital syphilis, pinta, yaws
Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever and chorea
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergies to penicillins, cephalosporins, or other allergens.
Use cautiously with renal disorders, pregnancy, lactation (may cause diarrhea or candidiasis in the infant).
Available Forms
Injection—600,000, 1.2 million, 2.4 million units/dose
Dosages
Adults
Streptococcal infections (including otitis media, URIs of mild to moderate severity): 1.2 million units IM as a single dose.
Early syphilis: 2.4 million units IM as a single dose.
Syphilis lasting longer than 1 yr: 7.2 million units given as 2.4 million units IM weekly for 3 wk.
Yaws, bejel, pinta: 1.2 million units IM as a single dose.
Erysipeloid: 1.2 million units IM as a single dose.
Prophylaxis of rheumatic fever or chorea: 1.2 million units IM every month; alternatively, 600,000 units every 2 wk.
