Therapeutic Actions

Testosterone analogue with androgenic and anabolic activity; promotes body tissue-building processes and reverses catabolic or tissue-depleting processes; increases Hgb and red cell mass.


Indications



  • Anemias caused by deficient red cell production


  • Acquired or congenital aplastic anemia


  • Myelofibrosis and hypoplastic anemias due to myelotoxic drugs


  • Unlabeled use: HIV-associated wasting



Available Forms

Tablets—50 mg


Dosages

Adults and pediatric patients

1–5 mg/kg/day PO. Usual effective dose is 1–2 mg/kg/day. Give for a minimum trial of 3–6 mo. Following remission, patients may be maintained without the drug or on a lower daily dose. Continuous therapy is usually needed in cases of congenital aplastic anemia.

Pediatric patients

Use with extreme caution due to risk of serious disruption of growth and development; weigh benefits and risks.
