Therapeutic Actions
Oxidation-reduction agent that converts the ferrous iron of reduced Hgb to the ferric form, producing methemoglobin; weak germicide in lower doses; tissue staining.
Indications
Treatment of cyanide poisoning and drug-induced methemoglobinemia
May be useful in the management of patients with oxalate urinary tract calculi
GU antiseptic for cystitis and urethritis
Unlabeled uses: Delineation of body structures and fistulas through dye effect; neonatal glutaric acidura II unresponsive to riboflavin
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to methylene blue, renal insufficiency, intraspinal injections.
Use cautiously with G6PD deficiency; anemias; CV deficiencies; pregnancy, lactation.

Injection—10 mg/mL (1%, 1 mL, 10 mL)
Dosages
Adults and children
1–2 mg/kg or 25–50 mg/m2 IV injected over several minutes. May repeat after 1 hr as needed.
