Therapeutic Actions
Thought to decrease food consumption and promote satiety by selectively activating the serotonin-2C receptors in the anorexigenic neurons in the hypothalamus.
Indications
Adjunct to diet and exercise for long-term weight management in adults with initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or greater or 27 kg/m2 or greater with at least one weight-related condition, such as hypertension or dyslipidemia
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with history of serious hypersensitivity to components of drug, severe renal impairment, pregnancy, lactation.
Use cautiously with concurrent use of other serotonergic or antidopaminergic agents, history of depression, history of priapism, moderate renal impairment, severe hepatic impairment, heart failure.

Dosages
Adults
10 mg PO bid without regard to food; if patient has not lost 5% of baseline weight within 12 wk, drug should be discontinued.
