Therapeutic Actions
Competitively blocks the effects of acetylcholine at muscarinic cholinergic receptors that mediate the effects of parasympathetic postganglionic impulses, relaxing the GI tract and inhibiting gastric acid secretion.
Indications
Adjunctive therapy in the treatment of peptic ulcer
Unlabeled use: Treatment of cholinergic-induced bronchospasm
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with known hypersensitivity to the drug; glaucoma; adhesions between iris and lens; stenosing peptic ulcer, pyloroduodenal obstruction, paralytic ileus, intestinal atony, severe ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon, symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy, bladder neck obstruction; bronchial asthma, COPD; cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial ischemia; sensitivity to anticholinergic drugs, bromides, tartrazine (tartrazine sensitivity is more common with allergy to aspirin); impaired metabolic, liver, or renal function; myasthenia gravis.
Use cautiously with hypertension, hyperthyroidism, HF, pregnancy, lactation, and in elderly patients.

Dosages
Adults
2.5 mg PO 30 min before meals and 2.5–5 mg PO at bedtime.
