Drug class

Skeletal muscle relaxant (centrally acting)


Therapeutic Actions

Precise mechanism of action not known but may be due to general CNS depression; does not directly relax tense skeletal muscles or directly affect the motor end plate or motor nerves.


Indications



  • Relief of discomfort associated with acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions, as an adjunct to rest, physical therapy, and other measures


  • Control of neuromuscular manifestations of tetanus



Available Forms

Tablets—500, 750 mg; injection—100 mg/mL


Dosages

Adults

Oral

Initially, 1.5 g four times a day PO. For the first 48–72 hr, 6 g/day or up to 8 g/day is recommended. For maintenance, 1 g four times a day or 750 mg every 4 hr PO or 1.5 g tid for total dosage of 4–4.5 g/day.



  • Tetanus: Up to 24 g/day may be needed.

Parenteral

1 g IM or IV; 2–3 g may be needed in severe cases. Do not exceed 3 g for longer than 3 days except when treating tetanus.
