Chronic illness in childhood affects a relatively high proportion of the population. Estimates vary but are thought to be around 10–12% (Eiser 1997). The term ‘chronic illness’ is a generic term that relates to a wide range of long-term conditions including those that have a biological basis and consequent effects on the physical functioning body systems; sensory or physical disabilities; conditions that impact on long-term mental health and well-being; and those that affect cognitive and psychological development, communication and learning. Some children and young people may be affected by more than one condition or disability or have symptoms that affect a number of body systems.
