Therapeutic Actions

Analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activities largely related to inhibition of cyclo-oxygenase and prostaglandin synthesis; exact mechanisms of action are not known.


Indications



  • Oral: Acute or long-term treatment of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis


  • Oral: Relief of moderate to mild pain


  • Ophthalmic solution: Inhibition of intraoperative miosis


  • Unlabeled uses of ophthalmic solution: Topical treatment of cystoid macular edema, inflammation after cataract surgery and uveitis syndromes; oral—juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, sunburn, migraine headache



Available Forms

Tablets—50, 100 mg; ophthalmic solution—0.03%


Dosages

Adults

Oral

Initial recommended daily dose of 200–300 mg PO, give in divided doses bid, tid, or qid. Largest recommended single dose is 100 mg. Doses above 300 mg/day PO are not recommended. Taper to lowest possible dose.

Ophthalmic solution

Instill 1 drop approximately every 30 min, beginning 2 hr before surgery (total of 4 drops).
