Therapeutic Actions
Analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activities largely related to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by inhibiting cyclo-oxygenase; exact mechanisms of action are not known.
Indications
Acute and long-term treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
Relief of mild to moderate pain
Unlabeled uses: Treatment of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis; symptomatic treatment of sunburn, migraine headache
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with significant renal impairment, pregnancy, lactation, hypersensitivity to aspirin, fenoprofen, or other NSAIDs.
Use cautiously with impaired hearing; hepatic, hypertension, and GI conditions.
Available Forms
Capsules—200, 300, 400 mg; tablets—600 mg
Dosages
Do not exceed 3,200 mg/day.
Adults
Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis: 400–600 mg PO tid or qid. Treatment for 2–3 wk may be required to see improvement.
Mild to moderate pain: 200 mg every 4–6 hr PO, as needed.
