Therapeutic Actions

Enhances transmembrane potassium currents, leading to stabilization of the resting membrane potential and reducing brain excitability; may also augment GABA effects.


Indications



  • Adjunct treatment of partial-onset seizures in adults who have responded inadequately to several alternative treatments and for whom benefits outweigh risk of potential visual damage



Available Forms

Tablets—50, 200, 300, 400 mg


Dosages

Adults

100 mg PO tid for 1 wk; titrate to maintenance dose of 200–400 mg PO tid at weekly intervals by no greater than 50 mg tid each wk.

Geriatric patients, patients with renal impairment

Initially, 50 mg PO tid; increase by no more than 50 mg tid at weekly intervals. Target dose, 250 mg PO tid for elderly patients, 200 mg PO tid for patients with renal impairment (CrCl less than 50 mL/min).
