Therapeutic Actions
Acts at specific opioid receptors, causing analgesia, respiratory depression, physical depression, euphoria.
Indications
Analgesic adjunct to maintain balanced general anesthesia
Primary anesthetic with 100% oxygen to induce and maintain anesthesia in major surgical procedures
Epidural analgesia with bupivacaine during labor and delivery
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with known sensitivity to sufentanil, pregnancy.
Use cautiously with obesity, hepatic disease, head injury, arrhythmias, lactation, severe debilitation, renal or pulmonary disease.

Injection—50 mcg/mL
Dosages
Individualize dosage; monitor vital signs routinely.
Adults
Adjunct to general anesthesia: 1–2 mcg/kg IV initially; 10–25 mcg for maintenance; not to exceed 1 mcg/kg/hr of expected surgical time.
With oxygen and skeletal muscle relaxant for anesthesia: 8–30 mcg/kg IV initially; supplement with doses of 0.5–10 mcg/kg IV; not to exceed 30 mcg/kg for the procedure.
Epidural analgesia: 10–15 mcg via epidural administration with 10 mL bupivacaine 0.125%; may repeat twice at 1-hr or longer intervals (total of three doses).
Pediatric patients 2–12 yr
With oxygen and skeletal muscle relaxant for anesthesia: 10–25 mcg/kg IV initially; supplement with doses of 25–50 mcg IV.
