Preventing Eye Injuries

Infants and Toddlers

Avoid any toys with long, pointed handles, such as a pinwheel on a stick.

Keep pointed instruments and tools (e.g., scissors, knives, screwdrivers, rulers, pencils, sticks) out of reach.

Do not allow the child to walk or run with any pointed object (e.g., spoon, lollipop, toothbrush) in the hand.

Keep the child away from the activities of older children and adults that involve projectiles (e.g., throwing a ball, golf, target shooting, swings).

Stress the importance of fire safety and poison protection in preventing thermal and chemical burns to the eye.

Shield the child’s eyes when in direct sunlight.
