Giving Intramuscular (IM) Injections


Your health professional has prescribed special medicine for the child, which must be given by injection. This is a good time to teach the child about medicines as special things that we need to take to get better. Several things can be done to make the injection less painful:





Instructions




1. Gather all equipment.


2. Wash your hands with soap and water. Count to 10 while washing, then rinse with clear water and dry with a clean paper or cloth towel.


3. Open the packet containing a new syringe.


4. Clean the top of the drug bottle with alcohol. Do not touch the top after you have cleaned it.


5. Remove the cap from the syringe. Do not touch the needle.


6. Pull back the plunger to fill the syringe with the same amount of air as the drug dose (Figure 1).
