Apply a topical anesthetic to the place you will give the injection before the medicine is due OR spray the area with the medicine ordered by your health professional right before you give the medicine. 2. Give the child something to do, such as squeezing someone’s hand, humming, or counting. 3. Keep the child involved in talking, singing, or watching TV. 2. Wash your hands with soap and water. Count to 10 while washing, then rinse with clear water and dry with a clean paper or cloth towel. 3. Open the packet containing a new syringe. 4. Clean the top of the drug bottle with alcohol. Do not touch the top after you have cleaned it. 5. Remove the cap from the syringe. Do not touch the needle. 6. Pull back the plunger and fill the syringe with the same amount of air as the drug dose (Figure 1).
