ultrasound scan, ultrasonography radiological technique enabling deep body structures to be visualised by recording reflections (echoes) of ultrasonic waves directed into tissues; used to confirm gestation, placental location, estimate fetal size, weight, maturity, liquor volume, identify fetal abnormalities, examine uterine contents, measure fetal and uteroplacental blood flow, observe fetal movements and functions; during amniocentesis, chorionic villus biopsy to avoid fetal or placental damage.


umbilical relating to umbilicus. U. catheterisation insertion of catheter into baby’s umbilical vein or artery to administer drugs or fluids, continuously monitor blood gases, exchange transfusion, obtain blood samples. U. hernia protrusion of intestine through umbilicus. See exomphalos.


umbilical cord cord connecting fetus and placenta, usually 50–60 cm long with two arteries carrying deoxygenated blood and one vein carrying oxygenated blood, surrounded by Wharton’s jelly covered by amnion. Cord is clamped and cut after birth, leaving stump which separates naturally through dry, aseptic necrosis within 5–7 days. U. c. presentation cord lying below presenting part with intact membranes. U. c. prolapse cord lying below presenting part with ruptured membranes, with danger of pressure on cord vessels and fetal anoxia; usually results from high or ill-fitting presenting part, allowing loop of cord to slip past; treatment involves maintenance of fetal oxygenation and delivery of baby immediately.

unassisted birth ‘freebirthing’, planned birth in which mother gives birth completely alone, without professional assistance or presence of family; it is legal for mother to choose this option but illegal for anyone other than midwife or doctor to support her, except in emergency.


unconjugated oestriol (UE3) biochemical marker used in second-trimester serum screening for Down syndrome; levels reduced in affected pregnancies; produced by placenta and fetal adrenals. See also quadruple test and triple test.


unconscious 1. insensible; incapable of responding to sensory stimuli. 2. part of mental activity concealed from consciousness.
