Therapeutic Actions

Inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride from the proximal and distal renal tubules and the loop of Henle, leading to a natriuretic diuresis.


Indications



  • Treatment of hypertension and edema associated with HF, hepatic cirrhosis, renal failure



Available Forms

Tablets—5, 10, 20, 100 mg; injection—10 mg/mL


Dosages

Adults

Warning Do not exceed 200 mg/day.



  • HF: 10–20 mg PO or IV daily. Dose may be titrated upward by doubling the dose until desired results are seen. Do not exceed 200 mg/day.


  • Chronic renal failure: 20 mg PO or IV daily. Dose may be titrated upward by doubling the dose until desired results are seen. Do not exceed 200 mg/day.


  • Hepatic failure: 5–10 mg PO or IV daily. Do not exceed 40 mg/day.


  • Hypertension: 5 mg PO daily. May be increased to 10 mg if response is not sufficient.

Pediatric patients

Safety and efficacy not established.
