The medical consultant In 2008, the Association for Palliative Medicine of Great Britain and Ireland published a strategy document that included a consensus statement on the role of doctors in palliative care (Box 50.1). The specialty association had just completed a year-long consultation of its 1000 members, and they represented every grade of doctor involved in palliative care. Aware that language around the clinical roles and categories of patient was changing, the authors of the document were careful to place the consultants in the specialty of palliative medicine at the service of supportive care, palliative care and end-of-life care teams (Noble, 2009). The Royal College of Physicians (London) publishes an up-to-date description of all medical specialties that allows comparison and demarcation (Royal College of Physicians, 2013).
