Supervision of Midwives

Chapter 37 Supervision of Midwives

The principal function of Supervisors of Midwives is the protection of the public, but the main ethos is support for midwives. Midwives have to notify their intention to practise midwifery each year to the Local Supervising Authority (LSA), and each LSA office maintains a database of all midwives practising within the LSA area. Information from the notifications of intention to practise is added to the details of registration on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register.

A Supervisor of Midwives is an experienced practising midwife who has completed an approved programme of preparation and is appointed by the LSA. See Box 37.1 for the activities of a Supervisor of Midwives.
