CHAPTER 55 A spinal fusion with rod attachment is performed to correct curvature of the spine. The fusion may use bone from the iliac crest or bone from a bone bank. The soft tissue around the vertebra is removed and the bone graft is placed for the fusion. Possible equipment needed for the procedure includes an open reduction set. A brief description of rods and systems used for the procedure follows: 1. A Harrington rod insertion uses distraction rods and compression rods to straighten the spine as much as possible. 2. Luque rods are placed and fixed at multiple points so corrective forces are spread throughout the length of the deformity. 3. The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (TSRH) system uses a cross-link to stabilize the rods, thus preventing rod migration. 4. The Cotrel-Dubousset system can be used for the correction of scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis. The rod can be derotated, compressed, and distracted.
