Therapeutic Actions
Acts systemically before tooth eruption and topically after tooth eruption to increase tooth resistance to acid dissolution and promote remineralization of teeth and inhibit caries formation by microbes.
Indications
Prevention of dental caries
Unlabeled use: Prevention of osteoporosis
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated in areas where fluoride content of drinking water exceeds 0.7 parts per million (ppm), with low-sodium or sodium-free diets, hypersensitivity to fluoride. Do not use in children younger than 3 yr when the fluoride content of drinking water is 0.3 ppm or more. Do not use 1 mg/5 mL (as a supplement) in children younger than 6 yr.
Use cautiously with pregnancy, lactation.

Chewable tablets—0.25, 0.5, 1 mg; tablets—1 mg; drops—0.125, 0.5 mg/mL; lozenges—1 mg; solution—0.2 mg/mL; rinse—0.02%, 0.04%, 0.09%, 0.2%; gel—0.1%, 0.5%, 1.2%, 1.23%
Dosages
Adults
Rinse or topical rinse
10 mL once daily or weekly; swish around teeth and spit out.
Gel or cream
Apply thin ribbon to toothbrush or mouth tray for 1 min; brush, rinse, and spit out.
