  • Birth weight at or below the 10th percentile on intrauterine growth chart


  • Occurs in premature, full-term, or postmature neonates


  • Places the neonate at risk for:



    • Perinatal asphyxia


    • Hypoglycemia


    • Hypocalcemia


    • Aspiration syndromes


    • Increased heat loss


    • Feeding difficulties


    • Polycythemia



  • Also called small for date, intrauterine growth restriction, and SGA
