CHAPTER 16 Sigmoidoscopy A sigmoidoscopy is the visualization within the sigmoid and descending colon with the aid of a scope and a light source. A brief description of the procedure follows: 1. The scope is inserted with the obturator in place. 2. The obturator is removed. 3. The air hose and bulb are attached to the scope. 4. The colon is inflated. 5.
