Beta2-selective adrenergic agonist
Therapeutic Actions
Long-acting agonist that binds to beta2 receptors in the lungs, causing bronchodilation; also inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators in the lungs, blocking swelling and inflammation.
Indications
Maintenance therapy for asthma and prevention of bronchospasm in patients 4 yr and older with reversible obstructive airway disease including nocturnal asthma
Long-term maintenance treatment of bronchospasm related to COPD
Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm in patients 4 yr and older
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to salmeterol, acute asthma attack, worsening or deteriorating asthma (life-threatening), acute airway obstruction, treatment of asthma without concurrent use of a long-term asthma-control medication such as an inhaled corticosteroid.
Use cautiously with pregnancy, lactation.

Dosages
Adults and patients 12 yr and older
Asthma or bronchospasm: 1 inhalation (50 mcg) bid at 12-hr intervals.
Exercise-induced asthma: 1 inhalation 30 min or more before exertion.
COPD: 1 inhalation (50 mcg) bid at 12-hr intervals.
Pediatric patients 4–12 yr
Asthma or bronchospasm: 1 inhalation (50 mcg) bid, 12 hr apart.
