Selective serotonin receptor antagonist
Therapeutic Actions
Selectively binds to serotonin receptors in the CTZ, blocking the nausea and vomiting caused by the release of serotonin by mucosal cells during chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgical invasion, an action that stimulates the CTZ and causes nausea and vomiting.
Indications
Prevention of acute and delayed nausea and vomiting associated with initial and repeat courses of moderately and highly emetogenic chemotherapy
Prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting for up to 24 hr after surgery (IV)
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to palonosetron or any of its components.
Use cautiously with known prolonged QT interval or high risk for prolongation of QT interval (hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, diuretic use, antiarrhythmic use), known allergy to other 5-HT3 receptor antagonists, pregnancy, lactation.
