Drug class

Thyroid hormone preparation (contains T3 and T4 in their natural state and ratio)



Therapeutic Actions

Increases the metabolic rate of body tissues, increasing oxygen consumption, respiratory and heart rate; rate of fat, protein, and carbohydrate metabolism; and growth and maturation; exact mechanism of action is not known.


Indications



  • Replacement therapy in hypothyroidism


  • Treatment of thyroid cancer


  • Treatment or prevention of various types of euthyroid goiters


  • Treatment of thyrotoxicosis with antithyroid drugs to prevent goitrogenesis and hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis during pregnancy


  • Diagnostic use in suppression tests

Tablets—15, 16.25, 30, 32.5, 48.75, 60, 65, 81.25, 90, 97.5, 113.75, 120, 130, 146.25, 162.5, 180, 195, 240, 260, 300, 325 mg


Dosages

Adults



  • Hypothyroidism: Initially, 30 mg/day PO, increased by 15 mg/day every 2–3 wk. Usual maintenance dose is 60–120 mg PO daily.

Geriatric patients or patients with heart disease or longstanding hypothyroidism
