MUSCLE ACHES AND JOINT PAIN

This guide will give you helpful hints to reduce muscle aches and pain in your joints.



SYMPTOM AND DESCRIPTION


Pain in your shoulders, hips, or knees can occur any time from 48-72 hours after you receive chemotherapy. When in your joints, this pain is called arthralgia; when it is located in your muscles, it is called myalgia. It is a side effect of your chemotherapy. The pain can range from a mild discomfort or ache to a severe pain. You may feel like you have the flu or you may have trouble moving around, for example, getting out of bed or a chair.


This muscle and joint pain may be more noticeable if colony-stimulating factors or growth factors (such as Neupogen) is a part of your treatment.


This side effect may not occur with every treatment; you may experience the pain after one treatment and not feel any aches the next treatment. You are at risk of having muscle aches and joint pain because of your cancer therapy. The drug you are taking called____________is the cause.


You may also be at risk for this side effect:



• If you have diabetes


• If you have a history of alcohol use


• If you have a history of arthritis


• If you have neuromuscular disease



PREVENTION


The first thing to remember is that the symptoms do not appear until 48-72 hours after your treatment is given and that the aches can last for 4-7 days.


It is difficult to prevent muscle aches and joint pain because the drug you are getting for your cancer treatment causes it.


Some helpful hints to reduce the symptoms include:
