Thiazide-like diuretic
Therapeutic Actions
Inhibits reabsorption of sodium and chloride in distal renal tubule, increasing excretion of sodium, chloride, and water by the kidneys.
Indications
Treatment of salt and water retention, including edema of HF and renal disease, nephrotic syndrome, and diminished renal function
Hypertension, as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensives
Unlabeled uses: Osteoporosis, diabetes insipidus
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to thiazides, hepatic coma, fluid or electrolyte imbalances, renal or liver disease, sulfonamide derivatives, anuria.
Use cautiously with gout, SLE, glucose tolerance abnormalities, hyperparathyroidism, bipolar disorder, lactation, pregnancy.

Tablets—2.5, 5, 10 mg
Dosages
Adults
Hypertension: 2.5–5 mg daily PO.
Edema of renal disease or HF: 5–20 mg daily PO.
Pediatric patients
Not recommended.
