CHAPTER 18 Laparoscopic gastric banding is a type of bariatric surgery. Bariatrics is the field of medicine that deals with obesity and weight-related conditions. A brief description of the procedure follows: 1. The laparoscope is inserted in the usual manner. 2. The Nathanson retractor is positioned to retract the liver. 3. The Hook scissors are used to make a circular window in the mesenteric layers of the fundus of the stomach. 4. The BioEnteric Lap Band (10 cm long) is introduced through another port and manipulated into the window in the mesenteric layer and around the stomach. The band connects to itself by means of a lasso end and a notched end; it is tightened as much as necessary and secured. 5. The Apple needle holder is used to suture the mesentery if needed. A needlepoint suture passer inserts the suture, and a Ranfac knot pusher is used to tighten the suture.
