Jaundice in pregnancy is rare but serious; may be due to hyperemesis gravidarum, pre-eclampsia, eclampsia, intrahepatic cholestasis, acute liver atrophy, infective hepatitis, serum hepatitis or drugs. Breast milk j. elevated unconjugated bilirubin in some breastfed babies resulting from presence of steroid in milk that inhibits glucuronyl transferase-conjugating activity.
