How to Avoid “Reading into the Question”

One of the pitfalls that can cause a problem when trying to answer a question correctly is “reading into the question.” This means that you are considering issues beyond the information presented in the question. Some strategies that you can use to prevent this include the following: identifying the ingredients of a question, reading carefully and looking for strategic words or strategic phrases, identifying the subject of the question and what the question is asking, using the process of elimination, and avoiding the “What if?” syndrome.

What Are the Ingredients of a Question?

Each multiple choice question contains a case event, a question query, and four options. It is important to identify the ingredients of a question as you read it because this will help you sort out the facts and determine what the question is asking.

What Are the Options?

The options are all the answers presented with the question.

Examples of some types of questions that may appear in your nursing exams or on the NCLEX exam and the specific ingredients of the questions are provided in this section. The answers to these example questions and the test-taking strategy also are provided. Additionally, Chapter 5 provides information about the various question types that will be in your nursing exams and the NCLEX exam.
