CHAPTER 17 A hemorrhoidectomy is the removal of the hemorrhoidal veins. A brief description of the procedure follows: 1. A Hirschman anoscope with obturator is inserted to dilate the anus. The obturator is removed to provide visualization. 2. A Hill-Ferguson retractor is used for anterior retraction. 3. A Sullivan rectal retractor with 5 blades is used for visualization. 4. An Allis tissue forceps is used for grasping the hemorrhoidal vein. 5. A Pennington hemostatic forceps is used for hemostasis at the base of the vein. A brief description of the procedure follows: 1. A grooved director is used for following the sinus tract. 2. A grooved dilator is used to facilitate following the sinus tract. 3. A Rosser crypt hook is used to find all parts of the sinus tract. 4. A Bard-Parker scalpel handle #3 with a #10 blade is used for wide excision of the entire sinus tract. 5. An Allis tissue forceps is used to grasp the specimen during excision.
