Foreword For decades, perioperative nurses in Australia have had to rely on international textbooks to provide reference and theoretical support for our dynamic, principle-based specialty. While the principles behind perioperative practice may be the same across the world, many nuances exist locally. Perioperative nursing: an introductory text has been written for and by Australian and New Zealand perioperative nurses and, by addressing those nuances, meets our local needs. With over 70 years of experience between them—both locally and internationally—I believe the editors of this textbook are not only academically qualified but professionally and clinically well placed to meld the input from a range of expert perioperative nurse contributors into a wonderful resource. It was not the intention of the editors to reproduce or replicate works that currently exist and, as such, this textbook does not seek to detail all surgical procedures but, rather, to provide a contemporary resource that outlines the essential information, particularly for undergraduate nursing students, postgraduate students of perioperative nursing and anyone with an interest in our specialty. This textbook covers a broad cross-section of our practice, from roles and responsibilities, including medicolegal aspects, to more clinical and technical aspects, such as wound care, patient positioning, scrubbing, gowning and gloving. It will provide a comprehensive resource for everyday use. I commend those involved for bringing us a geographically relevant, contemporary work that is based on well-researched evidence, which I have no doubt will assist us in providing safe and effective care for our patients.
