Benzodiazepine receptor antagonist
Therapeutic Actions
Antagonizes the actions of benzodiazepines on the CNS and inhibits activity at GABA-benzodiazepine receptor sites.
Indications
Complete or partial reversal of the sedative effects of benzodiazepines when general anesthesia has been induced or maintained with them, and when sedation has been produced for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
Management of benzodiazepine overdose
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with hypersensitivity to flumazenil or benzodiazepines; patients who have been given benzodiazepines to control potentially life-threatening conditions; patients showing signs of serious cyclic antidepressant overdose.
Use cautiously with history of seizures, hepatic impairment, panic disorders, head injury, history of drug or alcohol dependence, pregnancy, lactation.

Injection—0.1 mg/mL
Dosages
Use smallest effective dose possible.
Adults
Reversal of conscious sedation or in general anesthesia: Give initial dose of 0.2 mg (2 mL) IV over 15 sec, then wait 45 sec; if ineffectual, repeat dose at 60-sec intervals. Maximum cumulative dose of 1 mg (10 mL).
Management of suspected benzodiazepine overdose: Give initial dose of 0.2 mg IV over 30 sec; repeat with 0.3 mg IV every 30 sec; can give further doses of 0.5 mg over 30 sec at 1-min intervals, up to a maximum cumulative dose of 3 mg.
Pediatric patients younger than 1 yr
