Therapeutic Actions
Bacteriostatic against Mycobacterium tuberculosis; mechanism of action is not known.
Indications
-
TB—any form that is not responsive to first-line antituberculotics—in conjunction with other antituberculotics
Contraindications and Cautions

Contraindicated with allergy to ethionamide, pregnancy.

Use cautiously with hepatic impairment, diabetes mellitus, lactation.

Tablets—250 mg
Dosages
Adults
Always use with at least one other antituberculotic. 15–20 mg/kg/day PO up to a maximum 1 g/day; dosage may be divided if GI upset is intolerable. Concomitant use of pyridoxine is recommended to prevent or minimize the symptoms of peripheral neuritis. Alternative dosing: 250 mg/day PO; gradually titrate to optimal dose.
Pediatric patients
10–20 mg/kg/day PO in two or three divided doses after meals (not to exceed 1 g/day) or 15 mg/kg/24 hr as a single daily dose.
