CHAPTER 24 A dilation and curettage of the uterus (D and C) is performed to treat illness or to obtain a specimen for microscopic evaluation. A description of the procedure follows: 1. An Auvard speculum is placed to open the posterior wall of the vagina. 2. A Heaney right-angle retractor is placed to elevate the anterior wall of the vagina. 3. A Schroeder tenaculum is placed on the cervix to stabilize the uterus. 4. A Sims uterine sound is inserted to determine the depth of the uterus. 5. Hegar dilators are inserted to dilate the cervix (from the smallest to the largest). 6. A Sims uterine curette is inserted to scrape tissue from the uterus. 7. A Thomas dull curette is used to remove any remaining tissue.
