Therapeutic Actions
Mechanism is unknown; is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid, a cofactor in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine; acetylcholine is the transmitter released by parasympathetic postganglionic nerves; the parasympathetic nervous system provides stimulation to maintain intestinal function.
Indications
Prophylactic use immediately after major abdominal surgery to minimize paralytic ileus, intestinal atony causing abdominal distention
Treatment of intestinal atony causing abdominal distention; postoperative or postpartum retention of flatus; postoperative or postpartum (if not breast-feeding) delay in resumption of intestinal motility; paralytic ileus
Topical treatment of mild eczema, dermatosis, bee stings, diaper rash, chafing
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with allergy to dexpanthenol, hemophilia, ileus due to mechanical obstruction.
Use cautiously in pregnancy, lactation.
