Therapeutic Actions

Mechanism is unknown; is the alcohol analog of pantothenic acid, a cofactor in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine; acetylcholine is the transmitter released by parasympathetic postganglionic nerves; the parasympathetic nervous system provides stimulation to maintain intestinal function.


Indications



  • Prophylactic use immediately after major abdominal surgery to minimize paralytic ileus, intestinal atony causing abdominal distention


  • Treatment of intestinal atony causing abdominal distention; postoperative or postpartum retention of flatus; postoperative or postpartum (if not breast-feeding) delay in resumption of intestinal motility; paralytic ileus


  • Topical treatment of mild eczema, dermatosis, bee stings, diaper rash, chafing
