Antihistamine (piperidine type)


Therapeutic Actions

Blocks the effects of histamine at H1 receptor sites; has atropine-like, antiserotonin, antipruritic, sedative, and appetite-stimulating effects.


Indications



  • Relief of symptoms associated with perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis; vasomotor rhinitis; allergic conjunctivitis; mild, uncomplicated urticaria and angioedema; amelioraton of allergic reactions to blood or plasma; dermatographism; adjunctive therapy in anaphylactic reactions


  • Treatment of cold urticaria


  • Unlabeled uses: Treatment of vascular cluster headaches, appetite stimulation, treatment of nightmares associated with PTSD, prevention of vascular headaches such as migraines



Available Forms

Tablets—4 mg; syrup—2 mg/5 mL


Dosages

Adults

For initial therapy, 4 mg tid PO. For maintenance therapy, 4–20 mg/day in three divided doses PO; do not exceed 0.5 mg/kg/day.

Pediatric patients 7–14 yr

4 mg PO bid or tid; do not exceed 16 mg/day.

Pediatric patients 2–6 yr
