Cholecystectomy

Possible equipment needed for the procedure includes a basic laparotomy set and a Thompson self-retaining retractor, if requested.

A brief description of the procedure through an abdominal incision includes:

1. A Balfour retractor is used for visualization after the abdomen is opened.

2. A mayo-Péan hemostatic forceps is used for hemostasis and grasping the gallbladder.

3. 2 Mixter hemostatic forceps are used for double-clamping the cystic duct.

4. A Westphal hemostatic forceps is used for blunt dissection of the gallbladder.

5. A long Bard-Parker knife handle #3 with a #10 blade is used for bisecting the cystic duct.

6. A long curved Metzenbaum scissors is used for dissection.

7. Ligaclip appliers are used for clipping bleeders.

If a common duct exploration is to be done, possible equipment needed for the procedure includes:

1. Bakes dilators, used for dilating the common duct.

2. A Randall stone forceps, used for retrieving any stones.

3. A Ferguson gallstone scoop, used for scooping out any small, gravel-like stones.
