Changing goals of care at the end of life To cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always. (Anonymous, 15th century) End-of-life care refers to the final days and hours of life. It involves continuing to identify the palliative care needs of both patient and family; managing pain and other symptoms; and providing psychological, social, spiritual and practical support within a multi-disciplinary team (MDT). All healthcare and social care professionals are responsible for managing end-of-life care to the best of their ability (Figure 55.1).
