Therapeutic Actions
Bactericidal; inhibits synthesis of bacterial cell wall, causing cell death.
Indications
Treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin-structure infections caused by susceptible bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-susceptible and methicillin-resistant strains), Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Klebsiella oxytoca
Treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia caused by susceptible bacteria: Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. aureus (methicillin-susceptible only), Haemophilus influenzae, K. pneumoniae, K. oxytoca, E. coli
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with history of serious hypersensitivity reactions to cephalosporins.
Use cautiously with renal dysfunction, pregnancy, lactation.
Available Forms
Powder for injection—400, 600 mg/vial
Dosages
Adults
600 mg every 12 hr by IV infusion over 1 hr for 5–14 days (skin and skin-structure infections) or 5–7 days (community-acquired pneumonia).
Pediatric patients
Safety and efficacy not established.
Patients with renal impairment
For CrCl of more than 30 and up to 50 mL/min, 400 mg IV over 1 hr every 12 hr; if clearance is more than 15 and up to 30 mL/min, 300 mg IV over 1 hr every 12 hr; for end-stage renal disease and patients on hemodialysis, 200 mg IV over 1 hr every 12 hr. (Administer after dialysis on dialysis days.)
