CHAPTER 99 Cardiac surgery relates to surgery of the heart. Some heart surgeries include a coronary artery bypass graft, or CABG; replacement of the heart valves, or valvular annuloplasty; or repair of the wall between the chambers of the heart, also known as a septal repair. Possible instruments needed for the CABG procedure include sternal saws and open heart extras. A brief description of the procedure follows: 1. A Hall sternal saw with blade is used to open the chest. 2. A Himmelstein retractor is used to elevate the chest wall to expose the mammary artery if the patient needs a coronary artery bypass graft. 3. A Cooley clamp is used when retrieving vessels for the grafts. 4. An octopus retractor with stabilizing blades is used to immobilize the area of the heart that is being sutured.
