CHAPTER 97: BEERY-BUKTENICA DEVELOPMENTAL TEST OF VISUAL MOTOR INTEGRATION—SIXTH EDITION (BEERY VMI-6)

Description

The Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual Motor Integration—Sixth Edition (Beery VMI-6) is a standardized assessment used to identify those individuals having difficulty with visual-motor integration as well as to measure the extent of integration of visual and motor abilities (McCrimmon, Altomare, Matchullis, & Jitlina, 2012). Designed for use across the lifespan, ages 2 to 100 years old, the most recent edition has principally represented a normative update from the fifth edition (Beery & Beery, 2010). Published by Pearson Inc., the Beery VMI-6 consists of one core task, Visual-Motor Integration (VMI), and two supplemental tasks, Visual Perception (VP) and Motor Coordination (MC). The VMI section evaluates an individual’s integration of visual perception and motor skills whereby the person is asked to copy a series of geometric forms using pencil and paper in which items are arranged in developmental sequence, from less to more complex; whereas the VP task evaluates an individual’s visual abilities without the use of any motor skills where the person is presented with various similar visual figures, of which one is the correct target stimuli (McCrimmon et al., 2012). The MC task is used to evaluate fine motor skills and often can be scored based on prior observations by the clinician during the previous subtest assessments, which includes such observations as whether or not the individual was able to hold a pencil correctly (McCrimmon et al., 2012). The VMI has both a short (21-item) and full (30-item) version where both take less than 15 minutes to complete. The administration time for the supplemental VP and MC tasks is approximately 5 minutes each. Higher scores and number of items passed indicate better performance.
