Therapeutic Actions
Directly inhibits enzymes required for nucleic acid and ATP synthesis in protozoa; effective against Pneumocystis carinii, now called Pneumocystis jiroveci.
Indications
Prevention and acute oral treatment of mild to moderate P. jiroveci pneumonia in patients who are intolerant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
Contraindications and Cautions
Contraindicated with development or history of potentially life-threatening allergic reactions to any of the components of the drug.
Use cautiously with severe P. jiroveci infections, the elderly, lactation, hepatic impairment.

Suspension—750 mg/5 mL
Dosages
Adults and patients 13–16 yr
Prevention of P. jiroveci pneumonia: 1,500 mg PO daily with a meal.
