Therapeutic Actions

Antibacterial; inhibits cell wall synthesis of susceptible bacteria, primarily staphylococci, causing cell death.


Dosages



  • IM: Pneumonia and empyema caused by susceptible strains of staphylococci in infants


  • Ophthalmic preparations: Superficial ocular infections involving the conjunctiva or cornea caused by susceptible strains of staphylococci


  • Topical ointment: Prophylaxis of minor skin abrasions; treatment of superficial infections of the skin caused by susceptible staphylococci



Available Forms

Powder for injection—50,000 units; ophthalmic ointment—500 units/g; topical ointment—500 units/g

Adults and pediatric patients

Ophthalmic

Administration and dosage vary depending on the product used. See the product’s package insert.


Topical

Apply to affected area one to three times per day; cover with sterile bandage if needed. Do not use longer than 1 wk.
