AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care

Chapter 34 AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care

Introduction

The AACN Synergy Model for Patient Care is integrated into the AACN CCRN examination. The Synergy Model is a conceptual framework that emphasizes that the needs or characteristics of patients and families drive the competencies or characteristics of the nurse. Each patient brings a set of eight characteristics (needs) to the health care situation. These characteristics are stability, complexity, vulnerability, predictability, resiliency, participation in decision making, participation in care, and resource availability. The Synergy Model also describes eight characteristics (competencies) that are essential for the nurse providing care to critically ill patients. These nurse characteristics are clinical judgment, advocacy and moral agency, caring practices, collaboration, response to diversity, clinical inquiry, facilitation of learning, and systems thinking. According to the Synergy Model, when patient needs and nurse competencies match, optimal patient outcomes are achieved. The Synergy Model is a blueprint for certified practice, and as such, AACN’s CCRN examination is based on the Synergy Model. This chapter illustrates how test questions based on the Synergy Model cover application of the model, rather than the concepts themselves. The rationale for each question identifies the nurse characteristic demonstrated in the question.
